Surgery Information
Things To
Remember When Admitting Your Pet for Surgery:
-
If you cannot personally bring
your pet to the office, make sure that the person you choose to send is
someone that understands your
wishes for your pet. The consent form will be signed by them with the
understanding that this ‘agent’ has your permission to give consent for all
procedures, tests, etc., that may be asked to be performed. The
person/agent sent must be at least 18 years of age to legally sign and give
consent. Without signed consent
forms, the procedures can not be performed.
-
For emergency situations,
additional procedures that may need to be performed, or that may occur while your pet
is under anesthesia; please leave a phone number where you can be reached
directly. If you cannot be reached the doctor will take appropriate measure
for the best interest of your pet.
-
Due to the importance of the visit
and the potential risks involved when dropping off your pet, please allow 20-25
minutes to be sure that all questions and concerns are addressed.
-
Pets need to be fasted before any
anesthetic procedure to help avoid gastrointestinal upset that can occur with
some anesthetics. The normal procedure for general anesthesia is
no food after 6pm and no water that morning However, pets
with special needs may have different requirements that the doctor will
discuss with you, the owner, prior to the procedure.
-
If your pet is on special
medications that need to be given at critical times be sure to bring the medications with
the pet at the time of admittance. To avoid any anesthetic complications or
any possible drug interactions the Veterinarian will need to know about ALL
medications that the pet is on, and the last time the medications were given.
