What to look for in a cat carrier

Jun 19 • 1 minute read

Do you struggle to get your cat into the carrier?  Do you have battle wounds from trying to place your cat in the carrier?  Does your cat stress once in the carrier?

Finding the best cat carrier:

The best kind of carrier is a sturdy carrier that opens from the top and from the front.  The carrier should also be easily taken apart from the middle.  You do not want to have to dump or pull the cat from the carrier, thus adding to the stress of the pet.

Ways to help reduce a pets anxiety with cat carriers:

1. The carrier should be left out in an area that the cat frequents regularly.
2. The carrier should have familiar bedding and toys placed in it.
3. Spraying the carrier or a towel with Feliway (a synthetic feline facial pheromone) can also entice the pet to go in the carrier.
4. Treats can be placed in the carrier to entice your cat to go into the carrier.  You would initially start doing this when you introduce the cat into your home.  Do not worry though if you have not been doing this.  Go ahead and start now, knowing that it may take several days to weeks before the pet is comfortable with the carrier.

If pet still is not going in the carrier try different bedding, different toys and different treats.  If that is still not working you may want to try a different carrier.  Remember you are trying to make this a low stress event, so be patient and don’t get discouraged.

As always do not hesitate to talk with your Veterinarian of the staff if you are have any questions or concerns.
